What could be more exciting than receiving a mystery package from overseas? Well, I was lucky enough to find one in my mailbox this week, all the way from Florence, Italy.

Designer and illustrator Simone Massoni sent me a copy of his latest project – this very cool A-frame 2012 calendar entitled Chicks & Types.

Chicks & Types

I know, it’s already March, but let’s just say our postal service isn’t exactly renowned for its efficiency… Anyway!

Each month is represented by a well respected typeface, accompanied by a whimsical pin-up girl. This quirky match perfectly captures the dilemma we type-lovers face: how do you choose! They each have their own unique personality and their own sexy curves, it’s easy to end up falling in love with a different one every week… I’m talking about the typefaces of course.

A few of my go-to faces are featured, such as DIN, Avant Garde, Rockwell, Helvetica and Bickham.

“Writing is strictly connected with the message it delivers. There is a writing style for every word or message you want to show.” – Luca Barcellona, Codex Issue 01

Luca enjoys practicing by illustrating words or phrases from music he finds personally meaningful. His skills have been called in by global brands such as Carhartt, Nike, Zoo York, Dolce&Gabbana, Sony BMG and Volvo, but what keeps him passionate is the never-ending quest for for new styles and mediums.

A few examples of Luca’s work from his Flickr:

Meticulous handcrafted type by Happycentro

I love these elaborate typographic creations by Italian agency Happycentro. The fact that these were done by hand, instead of simulating the textures, shapes and lighting in Photoshop, is awesome!

What strikes me is how the illustrations look okay in isolation, but they only really come to life on the pages of the magazine as part of the layout!
